History
Mithiel was born in Doriath, Beleriand during the 1224th year of the trees. There she was raised in the perpetual starlight that covered Middle-Earth at that time and protected from evil as all those in what would come to be known as Doriath were, by their great King and Queen, and later the Girdle of Melian.
She lived in a small settlement with her family for several centuries, preferring the trees to the now-growing cities and manicured spaces that many of her people built and moved to. She spent these first centuries learning forestry, the way of the trees, the weather, the plants and the creatures that inhabited her homeland.
This was something she was especially gifted at, and more than that it was something she loved and with the help of her family and friends, her mentors, she became not just naturally gifted but skilled in the arts she so admired.
More and more as she aged she spent time away in the deeper parts of the woods, always learning from both nature and anyone she came across what she could. When at rest she would sing and talk to the trees, hoping that though her song was just an echo of those of legend that they could bring them the same joy that listening to the trees and the wind brought her.
As the dangers of the world increased, her parents begged her to get training in Menegroth, for they had no skill to teach her with weaponry and there was every chance she would one day go beyond Melian's Girdle, or worse still that the evil that brewed in the north would find them and not even their Queen's power would be enough.
So she went and for a time dwelt in Menegroth, trading her skill in herbs and forestry for lessons in archery and hand-to-hand combat. The city felt smothering to her compared to the comforting blanket of the trees and the free and open skies she could see when she climbed them as she had most nights at home but she found friendship there and grew more accustomed to it over time, though never fully comfortable.
In Menegroth she also refined her skill at the harp and flute that she had learnt as a child, though mostly she gave them up for singing as she could sing not just in Elven tongues but also copy the songs of the birds that didn't come to this stone-walled place and made many of her peers and friends glad to listen to her. for if their city could not welcome all of nature, then an elf so well versed in their songs was not a bad option while Daeron was otherwise occupied.
She left Menegroth around a century after arriving, having learnt enough (so she thought) to protect herself if the need should arise, and much desiring to once again live amongst her beloved forest where she was free to be herself. She had made many friends in those years, and though she would miss them she did tell them how they might find her if ever the finely carved walls grew tiresome and then she took her leave.
Never before nor during any time after was Mithiel gifted with such joy as when she rode home. She danced with her trees and sang to her birds and rested on the highest boughs of the oldest trees, telling them everything she had learnt in her time away and listening for all that had happened to her favourite part of the forest in that time as well.
Perhaps it was a quiet existence, withdrawn from any but her home community, but she found true peace in those days. Even with the background rumblings of Morgoth, the promise of war, and the trouble caused by the sons of Fëanor, little weighed on her mind until the Girdle was indeed not enough and disaster began to befall Doriath.
(wip)Family
Mithiel is an only child, and will remain so unless her parents return from the halls of Mandos.
Personality
Not an attention grabber like some of her people, Mithiel has spent too much time in the woods with little more than the trees and wildlife for company so she can appear to be quiet or even withdrawn at first. Often with a side of "grumpy" if she does not think she can trust you.
When she is comfortable, however, she is warm and welcoming and happy to make friends with damn near anyone or anything. Tree? Elf? Dwarf? Hobbit? Rosebush? Doesn't matter, she'll give it a go. Even those pesky, regular-sized men who like to run around causing trouble.
Regardless of whether she is feeling comfortable or not, she does hold some opinions very strongly and may press them even when it is out of the question for her to do so, be it due to rank and station or something else.
She is fiercely loyal and fairly brave, though she is no warrior unless pressed. She will always be much more of a pacifist at heart.
Abilities
As she is an elf, Mithiel is naturally gifted at a lot of things. Amongst her own kind she is somewhere in the middle, neither especially great or from a great house nor at all weak.
Languages –
Natively, Mithiel speaks Doriathrin which is a type of Sindarin elvish. She also speaks common Sindarin, which became her most commonly used tongue after the sinking of Beleriand.
She can also speak and understand Quenya, but due to an edict her King, Elu Thingol, made upon the discovery of the Kinslaying at Alqualondë she will not converse in it baring special circumstances. She holds to this even after Beleriand is but a distant dream and will only speak the names of people and things in Quenya, if that is how they are commonly called.
She is excellent at learning languages and so will learn them as needed, i.e. when she comes upon the race of men, or if she happens to meet some dwarves, etc.
Enhahnced Senses –
What it says on the tin, or as the meme goes "What can your elven eyes see?" Damn near everything, honestly. The same more or less goes for all her other senses.
Elves can see essentially as far as the world goes so long as there is nothing blocking their sight. They hear excellently, smell with great clarity, etc.
Magic –
For the most part, the elves would not call it as such, but many others of Middle-Earth would call the elven ways magic. For a better explanation than I can offer, please see here.
In Mithiel's case, most of her skill is around the natural cultivating of forests and plants, as well as the things that can be made from their fruits. She also has some skill as a healer, but less than someone who practised it all the time.
Disclaimer
This biography and my portrayal of Mithiel is likely to get some things wrong here and there about canon, though I am decently familiar with the Silmarillion and Tolkien's legendarium. It's just a lot to remember, especially the dates, and I may screw up from time to time. Sorry!
